This week Soldiers Can’t Dance were treated to the Deadl.ie treatment and were the first in line to scoop up a free shoot. The shoot took place in an abandoned building in the city that was as scary as it was amazing. With thin corrugated iron crumbling beneath our feet, pigeons taking flight and shaking the walls in the process, not to mention the eerie discarded children’s toys littered about the place, the building is one that after this weekend, I’ve probably seen enough of.

The band arrived as I’d hoped. Stylish, on time and up for a good explore of the place. The building was huge so after a good 30 minute search of the place, we’d found our locations. First up the ‘X’ wall (picture 1). A flat wall, with one light pointing at it, with a smoke bomb between the guys and myself and a light above the smoke and the band was how the shot was set up.

As I couldn’t have the light directly above me – given I was shooting quite zoomed in, and the assistant would’ve been visible in the shot, I had the light come from the left. This gives a small fall-off in the light come the right side of the image, but nothing I don’t find acceptable.

The second shot was in the main body of the building. It was full of thick, thick dust, pigeon shit and oddly, rolls of film. There was a large walkway that led down the building about 9 feet above the ground. I raced down this and placed a light at the first crossing of walkways,  point back directly towards the camera and a smokebomb in between the two. The flash behind the smoke was set to full power to really blow out the background, and as the light was slightly tipped up, it also gave a slight fill to the dungeon-like background.

The smoke bombs run for above 30 seconds outdoors normally. Given the dark conditions in ‘the cave’ and the lack of wind, they ran about twice as long. Even after this, they hung around in some sense for a while. Initially they looked too thick, but after a few moments it became manageable. Unfortunately – I missed a few ideal conditions of the smoke given my flash recycling time, but overall I’m happy.

This time I was closer to the band, shooting wide, so I could have my assistant behind me lighting the scene evenly. You can really see the difference. It’s much more even and it’s my personal favourite of the shoot.

I deliberately left Luke (in the orange shirt) to either side of the shot. The guys were all wearing dark colours initially (Luke had a leather jacktet) but I needed to make them stand out slightly. We ditched the jacket and I felt it too obvious to put the only guy in black in the middle.

Yes, The Darkness are back and I wrangled a pit pass for this explosive show.

I wasn’t expecting it to be half as good as it turned out to be. It’s been nearly five years since they last released anything, so expectations of a ‘reunion tour’ scenario, y’know ‘take the money and run through a set’ was quite high. Turns out all Justin and co. want is to be loved. And that they were. I must admit, it’s not hard to love a grown man who prances about in new jumpsuits every few minutes, whilst belting through some stomper hits… before riding a security guard like a bronco. …you just don’t get enough of that at the Olympia.

What a week

Alas, it was not to be with the NME. I was beaten by the better picture, in the end – and rightly so, I feel. Truth be told, I was of course a little bit disappointed, but perhaps only because during the extended wait, I had convinced myself I had won it. You know, like when you buy a lottery ticket and just before the first ball comes out you think to yourself ‘I’m definitely going to buy a llama. Feck it, I’m getting three with this kind of money’. Unfortunately I will not be jetting off to the NME, nor indeed for that matter, setting up Finglas’ first llama sanctuary. Shame, really.

So that was my Monday. Well, I also had some e-mails setting up shoots for State.ie’s Faces of 2011 Spectacular.

Tuesday saw me shoot the marvelous Elaine Mai for State, up near Whelans in Dublin. With help from the fantabulous Abe Tarrush we got some sexy-mid-day-softbox-strobist action going. Here’s one from the shoot anyway:

Wednesday saw me shoot the Dublin five-piece Alice Can’t Turn Left before their gig in Sweeneys, again with help from the Marvellous Mr.Tarrush I managed to pull off some great strobist ideas picked up from the truely amazing Todd Owyoung:

And then Thursday saw me entertain fiddle-phenomenon Daithi in the Phoenix Park, before he was swept off to Limerick for his show that evening. With no help for the shoot and the wind turning my softbox into a highly expensive kite towards the end of the shoot, I was lucky enough to be able to grab a few softbox-aided shots before the wind sent us packing. Oh, and I got a wave from the new president leaving the Aras in his new car n’all!

Today being Friday, I’m taking a well deserved ‘eating-my-body’s-weight-worth-of-cake’ break. Battenburg is my saturated-fat crumble of choice today. It goes down well with a pear cider, I find… I tell thee, the life of a Dublin-based rock photographer is glamourous to no end…





Flogging Molly, Olympia, 24/8/11

Flogging Molly were at the Olympia tonight and they were insanely good. I’ve got a helluva lot of work to get through the next few days, so here’s another taster until I get everything sorted!

Retarded Cop, Live at the Button Factory, 11/08/2011

Last night Retarded Cop played support to Jello Biafra at the Button Factory. He was feckin’ lethal. Starting with my favourite ‘Squirrels’ and finishing with a spectacular version of Popicalia, Retarded Cop are one of Ireland’s best live acts. They’re bloody energetic too, which makes for great photos. These are only a snapshot of the lot – you can check the set out over on flickr HERE

 





Tommy McNulty

I recently met up to photograph musician Tommy McNulty in Temple Bar. Having found my 50mm (It had run away on me) I took it along and used it for the first time in far too long. I also brought the strobes with me, as I am now wont to do and worked as best I could with some very changeable lighting conditions. I’m happy with the shots, they’re fit for their purpose (for posters – hence al the ‘white space’), but Tommy should be appearing on Deadl.ie again soon, albeit in more fun shots.

 

We also gave levitation a go. It was a bit freaky.
